I’ve always loved paddling unlimited boards. There’s a special feeling you get from gliding through the ocean on a 17 or 18 foot board that just can’t be matched on a 12’6 or 14. Unlimiteds are slightly challenging at first but I reckon that’s half the fun. Once you get the hang of it you never want to paddle anything else!
Unlimited race boards are pretty common over here in Hawaii but almost non-existent everywhere else. When it comes to unlimiteds: Not many brands make them, not many paddlers ride them, and not many events focus on them. Maybe it’s time to change that. Why not?! → READ MORE
If the Battle of the Paddle is the Super Bowl of SUP, then Tahiti’s Hawaiki Nui Va’a race is the Super Bowl of the outrigger canoe world.
The Hawaiki Nui is a three-day, Tour de France-style challenge that sees the best teams from Tahiti and the surrounding islands battle it out alongside half a dozen international crews.
Pretty much the only place where outrigger canoeing is more popular than in Hawaii is in French Polynesia. Over there, outrigger isn’t just a sport, it’s quite literally a way of life. I’ve just finished a brief but amazing trip to Japan, a place with so much spirit, so much generosity and so much potential to become a major SUP destination. It was unreal.
