The biggest stand up paddle race you’ve (probably) never heard of is happening in Australia tomorrow (Monday, 27 January). The ‘Iron X’ event on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast is an invite-only, multi-discipline paddle race featuring the likes of world number one Michael Booth, 2018 #1 Lincoln Dews, James Casey, Jackson Maynard, Jordan Mercer and several of Australia’s top lifeguarding athletes.

Paddlecast #008: “Ironman” Jackson Maynard talks elite ocean racing and overcoming life’s obstacles

I sat down for a chat with a very interesting athlete today: professional ironman, part-time SUP racer and all-round legend Jackson Maynard.

Maynard hails from my hometown here on the Gold Coast where he represents our local surf lifesaving club, Currumbin Vikings. He competes on the elite and prestigious Nutri-Grain Ironman Series (“lifeguard racing”) but to reach the pinacle of his sport, Maynard has had to overcome some incredible medical setbacks.
