Connor Baxter has just WON the inaugural Aragas Magallanes Paddle Challenge, defeating his arch rival Kai Lenny in the beautiful wilderness of Patagonia, Chile.
Connor didn’t have it all his own way though, with Kai taking out the Long Distance race on Day 1 of this $20,000 event, which also serves as the first stop of the 2013 Stand Up World Series. Wearing the yellow jersey after his victory last year, Kai battled with Connor right across Lago Gray (“Grey Lake”), the epic, iceberg-filled host of yesterday’s race. But despite Connor leading early, the young Naish star was able to break away in the final stages of the 13 mile race to take the win and start the 2013 Series the same way he finished 2012.
This weekend’s SUP racing enjoyed an insanely cool backdrop (pun intended), with glaciers, icebergs and steep mountains rising up all around the paddlers. So click through for more photos of the action plus the full race results… → READ MORE
We’re just 72 hours away from what is guaranteed to be the coolest SUP race of the year (pun intended), the Aragas “Magallanes Paddle Challenge” in Patagonia, Chile.
This is the first stop of the 2013 Stand Up World Series, which is clearly jumping in at the deep end as paddlers will battle for $20,000 in a ridiculously awesome location. But here’s the coolest part: 45% of that $20k goes to the winner, meaning one paddler will walk away with $9,000 in their hands. Not bad for a weekend’s work… → READ MORE
Watch this teaser vid for what is set to be one of the coolest SUP races of the year (no pun intended…). The 2013 Magallanes Paddle Challenge is happening next week in the wild Southern region of Chile, on a lake that’s filled with icebergs and surrounded by crazy mountains.
It’s not the first place that comes to mind when you think SUP racing, but it’s definitely going to provide a dramatic backdrop for some of the world’s fastest paddlers… → READ MORE
The 2013 Stand Up World Series is kicking off next month with a major (and very unique) new SUP race: The Magallanes Paddle Challenge in Patagonia, Chile.
Basic info about this event leaked a few months ago and recently we saw the epic event poster, but now all the details are out and it looks pretty awesome. The event is set in an incredibly unique location, has $20,000 in prize money and offers something not a whole lotta races can lay claim to: Icebergs. How cool is that? → READ MORE
It’s not often that an event poster on its own is news-worthy, but I reckon this promo piece for next month’s Magallanes Paddle Challenge makes the cut. The event is happening March 14th-17th in Chile and will be the opening race of the 2013 Stand Up World Series.
While the World Series had more than its fair share of ups and downs in 2012, this year’s schedule looks promising, and as the first event of the year, the $20,000 Magallanes Paddle Challenge will go a long way towards setting the tone for the rest of the season. Hopefully it’s a success and builds momentum for the remainder of 2013, because one thing the World Series is definitely doing is pushing the boundaries of SUP racing. This poster sums it up perfectly…
Just look at it: A giant iceberg sitting in a lake. A Stand Up Paddler that looks like an ant in comparison. All happening in the wilds of Patagonia. It’s not your average flat water SUP race… → READ MORE
The word is out about one of the first stops of the 2013 Stand Up World Series. The Magallanes SUP Challenge will be held early next year at “Glacier Bay” in Patagonia (Chile). As the pic suggests, the location is pretty insane, with giant icebergs floating around courtesy of a glacier coming down off the surrounding mountains.
