Paddle Royal Adds $20,000 Purse, Becomes 2013 Stand Up World Series Season Opener

UPDATE 3/12: The event has just wrapped up. Check out the full 2012 Paddle Royal results.

UPDATE 24/8: The 2012 Paddle Royal is no longer part of the 2013 Stand Up World Series. The race formats were incompatible and the Paddle Royal organisers didn’t want to mess with a winning formula.

The rest of the event remains the same and looks like it’ll be one of the races of the year. $20k is still on the line and stars such as Candice Appleby, Eric Terrien, Chase Kosterlitz, Anthony Vela and dozens of other elite paddlers have already signed on.

Original story:

The Caribbean’s biggest SUP race, the Paddle Royal, is stepping things up this year with a huge prize purse and a spot on the Stand Up World Series calendar.

The 2012 Paddle Royal will be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico on the 1st & 2nd of December. It’ll feature $20,000 in cash prizes and officially becomes the season opener for the 2013 Stand Up World Series.

$15,000 and World Series ranking points will be up for grabs in the elite 12’6″ class, with another $5k on offer for the 14 footers.

The 2011 Paddle Royal drew plenty of international competitors, and with $20k on offer will no doubt attract even more stars to San Juan later this year.

We’ll keep you posted right here on SUPracer.com with full coverage and results of the Paddle Royal SUP race when the action kicks off in December.
