I’ll sign off by leaving you with this pic of Connor looking up at us from the podium…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20145:46 pm

Ok that does it for our live blog. Thanks for tuning in. That was a long but very entertaining couple of days on the beach in Waikiki. This event has some serious future to it.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:30 pm

We’ll have full results and a recap of the action up shortly. For now all the paddlers are buzzing around downstairs, getting filmed for the CBS production and reliving the race. Connor just got dunked, NFL-style, with a giant bucket of water.

Great effort from Kelly Margetts in 8th place, who, like Danny, started on the second row.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:20 pm

Tough break for Josh Riccio, the underdog who was sitting in 3rd for the final 200 metres, only to be passed by four guys riding a wave in the final seconds

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:20 pm

There weren’t so many waves in the finale unfortunately, but the racing was pretty full on. Amazing work from Connor and Kai to break away, but just as amazing was Danny Ching, who fought back from around 20th in the first 30 seconds to finish 3rd.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:09 pm

There will be 9 buoy turns…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:09 pm

Connor, Kai, Zane, Jake, Riggs, I think that’s Josh Riccio, then Kelly Margetts. They round buoy #3.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:09 pm

Travis in 14th

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:08 pm

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:08 pm

Connor, Kai, Jake, Zane. Connor with a board length over kai. Jake on Kai’s tail. Zane and now Riggs right behind them. Kelly Margettts doing really well in 7th. Gap back to 8th

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:08 pm

Connor hits the second buoy. Not too many waves. Gonna be a flat race.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:07 pm

Jake 4th, Riggs 5th, Riccio 6th, Kelly Margetts 7th (from the second row!)

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:07 pm

Connor Baxter and Kai Lenny best of the start

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:06 pm

THEY’RE OFF!

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:06 pm

Show time…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:05 pm

The guys and girls on the second row have their paddles planted in the sand right behind them, so that’ll take them an extra half a second to get ready. I’d say the advantage of the front row is only about 2-3 seconds, but it’s being stuck behind the pack that will hurt the chances of the contenders who are on row #2 (Travis, Danny, Annabel)

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:04 pm

One minute to go

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:03 pm

In the distance I see a chopper incoming, which is going to provide some awesome aerial footage of the race.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:03 pm

Below: last minute preparations and course instructions.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:02 pm

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:01 pm

Contenders…

Look for Kai, Connor, Zane and Jake on the front row, then Danny and Travis on the second.

Women: Shak, Jenny and Candice are on the front row, Annabel and Morgan on the second.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:01 pm

Ok we’re about a minute or two away… The lines are set.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20144:00 pm

Here’s the starting order. It’s Formula 1 style with a front row and a second row. The front row will have a three or four second advantage over the second row…

#1: Kai Lenny

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20143:59 pm

Just a few minutes from the start…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20143:51 pm

Ok we’re 10 minutes from start time

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20143:27 pm

Ok now I really need a swim… 30 minutes til go time.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20143:26 pm

Here’s how the $25,000 gets split. The top guy and girl take home the same amount ($5k) but the women only receive $9,000 (36%) of the total purse, while guys receive $16,000 (64%).

You’ll never please everyone but I think that’s a fair compromise.

WOMEN
1st: $5,000
2nd: $2,500
3rd: $1,500
TOTAL: $9,000

MEN
1st: $5,000
2nd: $3,500
3rd: $2,500
4th: $1,500
5th: $1,250
6th: $1,000
7th: $750
8th: $500
TOTAL: $16,000

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20143:24 pm

What’s on the line?

Well apart from the bragging rights that come along with winning one of the biggest races of the year, there’s also some cash. Quite a bit of it in fact.

The Showdown organisers will be handing out $25,000 prize money in $100 bills at the awards ceremony tonight. No waiting to cash cheques. No wondering when you’re getting paid. This is how you do it…

Here’s the prize purse breakdown. Organisers made an interesting compromise between men’s and women’s total prize money, which I think is pretty fair.

The top guy and top girl will win the same amount ($5,000), however the women only get paid three deep, whereas in the men’s it goes all the way down to 8th place.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20143:22 pm

So the Showdown finale will be at 4pm local time. Right now it’s 3:20pm, so we’re closing in on the main event…

The Showdown will be a Z-shaped slalom course across the surf break here at “Queen’s” surf spot in Waikiki. The waves aren’t as big as yesterday but the tide is dropping, so hopefully we’ll get some entertainment and carnage.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20143:15 pm

So when you add in the 8 women (the men and women will race the Showdown finale together) it’s going to look like this for the start of the main event (which is just 45 minutes away…)

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20142:49 pm

Ok we’ve got the women’s start list sorted for the SHOWDOWN

Showdown Seeding (surf result / race result)

FRONT ROW
#1: Candice Appleby: 1st / 4th = 5 points
#2: Shakira Westdorp: 7th / 1st = 8 points
#3: Jenny Kalmbach: 7th / 2nd = 9 points
#4: Izzi Gomez: 3rd / 11th = 14 points

SECOND ROW
#5: Morgan Hoesterey: 9th / 5th = 14 points
#6: Annabel Anderson: 13th / 3rd = 16 points
#7: Vanina Walsh: 2nd / 15th = 17 points
#8: Aline Adisaka: 4th / 15th = 19 points

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20142:28 pm

The men’s side is an interesting one: There were a lot of double qualifiers, so I might be up here for a while running the numbers :-D

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20142:28 pm

So the women’s SHOWDOWN start list is:

Candice Appleby, Shakira Westdorp, Jenny Kalmbach, Annabel Anderson, Vanina Walsh, Aline Adisaka, Izzi Gomez and Morgan Hoesterey.

We’ve just gotta calculate the seeding, but I can already guarantee Candice will be the highest seed and therefore definitely starts front row.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20142:27 pm

The women’s is easy. There was only one Double Qualifier and that was Candice Appleby, so there is only one Lucky Loser spot. And that spot goes to Morgan Hoesterey, who was 5th in the racing but had a better overall event result than the two padddlers who got =5th in the surfing (Mason Schremmer and Lara Claydon).

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20142:26 pm

Ok so much for taking a swim… I’m sitting up here in the judging tower (awesome view) with the organisers doing the maths for the Showdown.

We’re working out two things:
- Seeding (to decide who gets front row, who gets second row)
- Lucky Losers (the guys that finished around 13th/14th but squeak through due to the double qualifiers)

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20142:17 pm

I’ll leave you with this image of the start of the racing finals. I believe I captured this just as the horn went on Semi Final #2, so in this pic will be Connor, Kelly, Kai, Slater, Fernando, Jake, Kody, Jayden and a bunch of other big names…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20142:15 pm

We’re gonna take a break for half or so now. Gotta go jump in that beautiful blue water… The Showdown finale is coming up in 1 hour 45 minutes (at 4pm local time) so make sure you’re back before then.

We’ll have the full start list for the finale well before the start of the race, so don’t go too far away…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20142:14 pm

On the men’s side it’ll be interesting to see which of the racing specialists snuck onto the front row, despite an early exist in the surfing. Danny and Travis both did super well in the race, however they didn’t get far in the surfing.

So they’ll be seeded somewhere in the middle of the pack, whereas Kai Lenny, Zane Schweitzer and those guys will be seeded near the top and are definitely on the front row.

If Zane/Kai/Connor are on the front row but Danny and Travis are on the second, it’s gonna be tough for those guys to come back.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20142:13 pm

However the big thing here is the two-row start line the Showdown is employing. The better you did overall for the whole event (result in the surf contest + result in the race), the higher your seeding for the Showdown finale.

I can tell you right now Candice will be seeded 1st, so she’ll be on the front row. Pretty sure Shakira will be on the front row. Jenny *might* sneak through to the front row, but Annabel is definitely on the second row.

That gives a big advantage to Candice and Shak. The top 4 seeded girls will be on the front row, the next 4 will be on the back row. The front row goes about 5 seconds before the second row, which is a big advantage in these short races (the Showdown will be a little longer than the qualifiers though – probably 10-15 minutes).

The 5 seconds is a nice advantage, but the biggest advantage is avoiding the pack. The paddlers on the second row will have to fight their way through the crowd to get near the front.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20142:11 pm

The big names were all looking good. On the women’s side a few of the big racing names didn’t get through, so I think it’s going to be a four-way race between: Annabel Anderson, Jenny Kalmbach, Candice Appleby and Shakira Westdorp.

Don’t wanna blow my own trumpet (well actually I do…) but my predictions for the top 4 were:
1st: Shak, 2nd: Annabel, 3rd: Jenny, 4th: Candice. Looking good so far :-D

Shakira has definitely been on fire this whole event. Annabel is as quick as ever and her only slight Achilles Heel (the waves) haven’t really turned on today, so the Showdown race might not produce the carnage we expected.

The less waves there are, the more Annabel has an advantage over the surf+race specialists such as Shak and Candice.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20142:02 pm

So that’s the “Y” racing done. It’s now 2pm on the dot and coming up at 4pm we’ve got the main event: the “SHOWDOWN” finale race.

We’ll have the full lineup of who qualified on the men’s side but the top 12 guys below are automatically through, as are the top 12 surfers. However a lot of guys finished top 12 in both, so there will be a few ‘lucky losers’.

I don’t wanna speak too soon but I’m pretty certain Jayden Jensen will go straight through as the top lucky loser. Brennan Rose will probably squeak through as well. Kelly Margetts will be on the bubble…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:55 pm

1st: Kai Lenny
2nd: Travis Grant
3rd: Danny Ching
4th: Jake Jensen
5th: Connor Baxter
6th: Zane Schweitzer
7th: Slater Trout
8th: Riggs Napoleon
9th: Noa Ginella
10th: Ryan Helm
11th: Noa Hopper
12th: Andrew Logreco
13th: Jayden Jensen
14th: Brennan Rose
15th: Kelly Margetts
16th: Chuck Glynn

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:54 pm

Jayden 13th, Brennan 14th, Kelly 15th, Chuck Glynn 16th

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:54 pm

Riggs Napoleon in 8th, Noa Ginella in 9th, Ryan Helm 10th, Noa Hopper 11th, Andrew Logreco 12th.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:53 pm

Zane 6th, Slater 7th…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:53 pm

Travis 2nd, Danny 3rd, Jake will get 4th, Connor 5th

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:53 pm

Kai is gonna take the win!

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:53 pm

Kai catches a bump. Again. Gets a lead. Danny and Travis on that next wave. Connor, Slater and Jake behind that. That’s the top 6 as they approach the beach.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:52 pm

They’re charging back to the gates for the final 200 metre sprint to the beach.

Kai, Danny, Travis, Connor, Jake, Slater

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:52 pm

Kai and Travis round the left buoy, Danny and Jake round at the same time on the right buoy… I’m absolutely loving this split buoy format.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:51 pm

Kai and Danny hit the gates first – Kai goes to the left buoy, Danny splits to the right buoy.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:50 pm

Travis Grant in 4th with Connor Baxter in around 5th. Super tight pack though.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:50 pm

Kai Lenny, Danny Ching and Jake Jensen go out hard.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:50 pm

In the water right now:

From semi final #1…
1st: Danny Ching
2nd: Zane Schweitzer
3rd: Travis Grant
4th: Riggs Napoleon
5th: Andrew Logreco
6th: Chuck Glynn
7th: Ryan Helm
8th: Noa HOpper

From semi final #2…
1st: Kai Lenny
2nd: Connor Baxter
3rd: Jayden Jensen
4th: Brennan Rose
5th: Noa Ginela
6th: Kelly Margetts
7th: Slater Trout
8th: Jake Jensen

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:50 pm

men’s final is ON!

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:49 pm

Now we’re about to start the men’s race final…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:48 pm

So the results from Semi Final #2:

1st: Kai Lenny
2nd: Connor Baxter
3rd: Jayden Jensen
4th: Brennan Rose
5th: Noa Ginela
6th: Kelly Margetts
7th: Slater Trout
8th: Jake Jensen
———-
9th: Kody Kerbox
10th: Kaihe Chong
11th: Tama Audibert
12th: James Casey
13th: Kaeo Abbey
14th: Fernando Stalla
15th: Dave Boehne
16th: Aaron Napoleon

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:47 pm

We’ve got an update on the PHOTO FINISH from the men’s second semi final. It was unfortunately Kody Kerbox who finished in 9th, by a whisker, and just misses out on a spot in the race qualifying final.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:47 pm

But right now the women’s SHOWDOWN lineup is:

Izzi Gomez (surf qualifier)
Aline Adisaka (surf qualifier)
Candice Appleby (surf + race qualifier)
Vanina Walsh (surf qualifier)
Jenny Kalmbach (race qualifier)
Annabel Anderson (race qualifier)
Shakira Westdorp (race qualifier)
+ 1 lucky loser… possibly Morgan Hoesterey

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:46 pm

So the top 4 are guaranteed to go through to the Showdown, however Morgan might sneak through as well, as Candice has now qualified through both the surfing and the racing. It’ll be between Morgan and the 5th placed surfer for that last spot in the Showdown main event… Whoever had the best overall event results. We’ll update you when we hear who made it.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:45 pm

1st: Shakira
2nd: Jenny
3rd: Annabel
4th: Candice
5th: Morgan
6th: Halie
7th: Bailey
8th: Sonni
9th: Lina
10th: Karen

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:43 pm

Shakira wins! Jenny, Annabel and Candice hit the beach together to safely qualify. They had a big lead…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:42 pm

Shakira is going to qualify very easy here. Cruising to the beach.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:42 pm

Shakira snags a wave! She’s getting a massive lead here. Jenny in second, Candice in third, Annabel in 4th.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:41 pm

Right now it’s Jenny, Annabel and Shakira looking strong as they round the outer boy. All the leaders went to the left buoy…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:40 pm

Only the top 4 out of these 10 women will make it from this qualifying race final into the main “Showdown” event.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:40 pm

Jenny Kalmbach takes an early lead… Candice, Annabel and Shakira looking strong as well.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:39 pm

They’re off!

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:39 pm

In the meantime we’ve got the women’s race final!

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:38 pm

We’re gonna have to go to the camera to separate them…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:37 pm

Jayden Jensen had an absolute cracker of a finish, sprinting home and then flying up the sand to get outright third behind Connor Baxter. Brennan was definitely 4th followed by Noa, then it got tight… I think Kelly Margetts was a clear 6th but Slater/Jake/Kody were in a photo for 7th and 8th.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:36 pm

Here’s my provisional results. It’ll be a photo for the final couple of spots because there are nine guys listed here and only 8 go through…

Kai, Connor, Jayden, Brennan, Noa, Kelly, Slater, Jake, Kody.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:36 pm

Ok that was a photo finish between about six guys…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:34 pm

Kai wins…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:34 pm

Kai catches a bump and takes a commanding lead. Connor and Slater battling for equal second. Kody, Jake, Ryan going for equal 4th.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:34 pm

Kai overtakes Slater, Connor equal second.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:33 pm

These preliminary qualifying races are super short and super intense. Each race is only about 3 or 4 minutes long. The guys have already turned the outside buoy and are charging back in…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:32 pm

Slater Trout goes to the right outside buoy, Connor follows him. Kai Lenny leads five guys to the left.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:32 pm

Out in the water we’ve got…

Connor Baxter, Jake Jensen, Kelly Margetts, Kai Lenny, Slater Trout, Noa Ginella, Fernando Stalla, Jayden Jensen, Brennan Rose, Kody Kerbox, James Casey, Kaihe Chong, Tama Audibert, Dave Boehne, Aaron Napoleon, Kaeo Abbey

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:31 pm

Semi final #2 is ON!

Slater Trout goes out like a rocket and takes the early lead. Connor 2nd, Kai Lenny 4th.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:30 pm

So going through to the race final are:

1st: Danny Ching
2nd: Zane Schweitzer
3rd:: Travis Grant
4th: Riggs Napoleon
5th: Andrew Logreco
6th: Chuck Glynn
7th: Ryan Helm
8th: Noa Hopper
+ the top 8 from semi final #2…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:28 pm

Danny, Zane, Travis, Riggs, Andrew Logreco, Chuck Glynn, Ryan Helm, Noa Hopper, Ricccio in 9th, Bullet Obra 10th, Javier 11th, Kai Bates 12th, Giorgio Gomez 13th, Belar Diaz 14th, Sean Poynter 15th, Justin Holland 16th.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:28 pm

Danny takes it in a five way sprint to the line, but all five of those guys were safely through. Ryan Helm, CHuck Glynn and Noa HOpper sprinted to get the final three qualifying spots.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:27 pm

Those four will catch Danny with this wave… Travis, Logreco, Riggs, Zane and Danny

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:26 pm

Actually Danny hit the gates first after having gone off to the right buoy. He gets a little runner to extend his lead. Travis Grant and Zane Schweitzer equal second. Riggs Napoleon right there. Logreco.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:26 pm

They’ve rounded the buoy in this first semi final. They’re charging back in. Travis leading. Riggs and Danny Ching looking strong.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:25 pm

Travis and Riggs went left, Danny went right

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:25 pm

They’re approaching the gate… will they head to the left or right outside buoy? This unique “Y” shaped course is pretty rad.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:24 pm

Travis Grant, Riggs Napoleon and Danny Ching are leading the pack out

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:23 pm

HORN!!! They’re off.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:23 pm

Seconds away…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:22 pm

Ok the guys are lined up for Semi Final #1. I see Travis standing there next to Ryan Helm. Danny is over next to Belar and Sean. Zane Schweitzer and Bicho Jimenez in the middle. This is gonna be tough… Gotta make Top 8 to qualify for the race final…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:19 pm

Those 16 guys are on the start line and will hit the water in a few minutes. The top 8 will go through to the “Y” race final, with the top 12 from *that* final getting an automatic spot in the SHOWDOWN main event.

Semi final #1 will be starting in a few minutes.

Semi Final #2 will be… Connor Baxter, Jake Jensen, Kelly Margetts, Kai Lenny, Slater Trout, Noa Ginella, Fernando Stalla, Jayden Jensen, Brennan Rose, Kody Kerbox, James Casey, Kaihe Chong, Tama Audibert, Dave Boehne, Aaron Napoleon, Kaeo Abbey

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:17 pm

SEMI FINAL #1 heat draw:

Danny Ching, Riggs Napoleon, Travis Grant, Zane Schweitzer, Chuck Glynn, Ryan Helm, Javier Jimenez, Sean Poynter, Noa Hopper, Bullet Obra, Andrew Logreco, Josh Riccio, Kai Bates, Justin Holland, Giorgio Gomez, Belar Diaz

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:11 pm

So Bailey and Karen move through to the women’s race final. Here’s the women’s race final lineup:

Candice Appleby, Shakira Westdorp, Halie Harrison, Lina Augaitis, Jenny Kalmbach, Annabel Anderson, Morgan Hoesterey, Sonni Honscheid, Bailey Rosen, Karen Jacobson.

But keep in mind that’s just the qualifying race final… Those women have to finish TOP FOUR in that race to make the Showdown

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:10 pm

Bailey takes it! That was a great finish. Karen Jacobson takes the second qualifying place. Izzi third, Talia 4th, Aline 5th, Lara 6th, Vanina 7th, Mason 8th.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:09 pm

Vanina Walsh fell… Izzi and Aline fighting hard but Karen and Bailey look good.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:09 pm

Bailey Rosen is looking good in first. Karen Jacobson caught up to her with a wave but now there’s a set out the back with a few girls perhaps going to catch them on the line!

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:07 pm

Bailey turns the outside buoy in first. Five of the girls chose to go to the left buoy, three went to the right.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:06 pm

Bailey Rosen is ON IT! Flying out the back through the first gates. She goes to the left while Talia heads to the right buoy…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:06 pm

Karen Jacobson looking pretty quick as well. Right now it’s Talia, Bailey, Karen in top three, with Izzi and Aline struggling to hold the pace of the racing specialists.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:05 pm

Talia Decoite charges off the line and takes the lead. The surf-specialist Aline from Brazil looking good in second, as is another surfer Izzi Gomez. Bailey Rosen had a slow start but has already moved up to the lead pack as they head out through the small waves

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:03 pm

The women’s second chance round is about to start: Bailey Rosen, Masom Schremmer, Talia Gangini, Lara Claydon, kareon Jacobson, Vanina Walsh, Aline Adisaka and Izzi Gomez. Only 2 will go through to the women’s racing final…!

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20141:00 pm

Those 8 guys will meet the 24 that qualified yesterday:

Semi Final #1: Danny Ching, Riggs Napoleon, Travis Grant, Zane Schweitzer, Chuck Glynn, Ryan Helm, Javier Jimenez, Sean Poynter, Noa Hopper, Bullet Obra, Andrew Logreco, Josh Riccio + 4 of the guys that just qualified through the second chance round.

Semi Final #2: Connor Baxter, Jake Jensen, Kelly Margetts, Kai Lenny, Slater Trout, Noa Ginella, Fernando Stalla, Jayden Jensen, Brennan Rose, Kody Kerbox, James Casey, Kaihe Chong + 4 of the second chance guys

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:57 pm

The top 8 that go through to the semis…

1st: Kai Bates
2nd: Tama Audibert
3rd: Justin Holland
4th: Dave Boehne
5th: Giorgio Gomez
6th: Aaron Napoleon
7th: Kaeo Abbey
8th: Belar Diaz

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:56 pm

Kai Bates snags a wave and charges through to the lead! He’s gonna take it.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:55 pm

Justin Holland charging back in, looking for a little bump. Top 8 out of these 24 guys will get a second chance and move through to the main semi finals.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:54 pm

This is fun to watch: The field went about 65% left / 35% right, now they’re meeting back up as they charge back through to the gates for the final sprint to the beach.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:53 pm

Interesting to see which way the paddlers go on this split buoy “Y” course (where you can choose to go to either the left or right outside buoy). Right now most of the field is heading left.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:52 pm

Few little waves coming in to mix things up. Some of the surf specialists are clearly struggling on their 12’6 boards, but most of these guys are flying out the back.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:52 pm

They’re off! Kaeo Abbey makes a fast start on the far left. Cody Huf charging through the middle and Justin Holland on the far right. Pretty cool to see all 24 guys hammering out to the first buoy

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:51 pm

24 guys are on the line… 1 minute countdown…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:49 pm

24 guys are standing on the start line. These are the paddlers that were knocked out in yesterday’s first round racing heats. The top 8 will get a second life and go through to the semi finals…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:49 pm

Ok we’re just about to start the second chance round for the men’s qualifying “Y” race…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:41 pm

10 minutes away from the first racing action of the day…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:35 pm

The repo round racers are lining up. They’ll be starting shortly after the women’s surf final, which will be over in 5 minutes

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:34 pm

They’ll be racing in the unique “Y” course (aka Choose Your Own Adventure), where paddlers can choose which of the two outside buoys they turn around.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:33 pm

The men’s qualifying race repechage round is coming up soon. 24 guys will have a second chance at making the semis, though only 8 will make it through…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:31 pm

It’s a little odd this surf contest… all the glory and prize money is on the big Showdown race, so there’s only bragging rights and a good showdown seeding up for grabs in these surfing finals

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:29 pm

Women’s final in the water now… Vanina Walsh, Candice Appleby, Izzi Gomez and Aline Adisaka

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:28 pm

Kai Lenny takes out the surfing final. Zane 2nd, Kai Bates 3rd, Fernando 4th

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:20 pm

Looks like a lotta guys will be double qualifying for the Showdown (i.e. finishing top 12 in both the surfing and the racing).

This means there will be a few lucky losers (guys that finish outside the top 12) that sneak through to the main event.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:16 pm

Men’s surf final is in the water now. Only bragging rights are on the line though, as all of these guys are already safely through to the Showdown.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201412:15 pm

Injury scare for Connor Baxter… the defending Showdown champion is nursing a sore shoulder that’s limiting his stroke. Could be a factor…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201411:36 am

We’re 90 minutes away from the serious racing action: The qualifying “Y” race prelims are on from 1-2pm, then we’ll take a break and get ready for the SHOWDOWN race at 4pm…

I’ll be sending live, play-by-play commentary during all of the racing, so stick around.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201411:30 am

Fernando takes out semi #2, Kai Bates 2nd, Sean Poynter, 3rd Kala Alexander, 4th Sean Poynter.

The men’s surfing final will be: Kai Lenny, Zane Schweitzer, Fernando Stalla and Kai Bates.

Women’s semis in the water. First up is Candice, Jenny, Mason and Vanina

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201411:14 am

Fernando Stalla, Sean Poynter, Kai Bates and Kala Alexander in the water for semi final #2.

These guys are competing for bragging rights in the surf contest, however all of them have already qualified for the main event – the Showdown race.

That’s where the top 12 surfer guys + top 12 racer guys (and top 4 women from each discipline) will be battling for $25k.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201411:05 am

Kai takes out semi final #1, Zane in 2nd, Bullet 3rd and Giorgio 4th.

These guys are all into the Showdown race later this afternoon.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201410:46 am

Kai Lenny, Zane Schweitzer, Giorgio Gomez and Bullet Obra in the water in semi final #1.

It’s high tide in about an hour, so conditions are getting tricky as waves go a little fat and inconsistent

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201410:45 am

Results from qtr final #4: 1st Shakira Westdorp, 2nd: Mason Schremmer, 3rd: Morgan Hoesterey

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201410:41 am

More results…

Women’s quarter final #2: 1st Aline Adisaka, 2nd: Jenny Kalmbach, 3rd: Talia Decoite

Quarter final #3: 1st Vanina Walsh, 2nd Izzi Gomez, 3rd: Sonni Hönscheid.

Quarter #4 is about to finish, then we’re into the men’s semis

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 201410:14 am

So the main event is the “Showdown” grand finale coming up at 4pm. It’s set to be an uber competitive (and very entertaining) race.

But who’s gonna win?

It’s always fun doing predictions and trying to guess the results. If you wanna have a crack at it, leave a comment down below.

Here are mine:

http://www.supracer.com/showdown-2014-predictions/

I’m saying Danny, Zane, Kai and Shak, Annabel, Jenny.

Just spoke to Buzzy Kerbox who thinks it’ll be:

1st: Kai, 2nd: Connor, 3rd: Danny, 4th: Travis, 5th: Zane

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20149:52 am

Candice takes out the first quarter with Lara in 2nd. Halie gets knocked out.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20149:40 am

Men’s semi final heat draw:

#1: Kai Lenny, Zane Schweitzer, Bullet Obra and Giorgio Gomez

#2: Fernando Stalla, Sean Poynter, Kai Bates and Kala Alexander

Stacked.

That’ll be coming up in 1 hour…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20149:38 am

Kala Alexander and Bullet Obra go through to the semis from the 4th and final quarter. Dave Boehne and Brennan Rose are out (however Boehne squeaks into the surfing top 12 and earns a spot in the Showdown finale).

Candice Appleby, Halie Harrison and Lara Claydon out in the water for the first of the women’s quarters.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20149:16 am

For the next few hours it’s all SUP surfing. We’ll keep you posted with results, however our main live coverage is gonna start during the racing finals at 1pm. That’s when we’ll have play-by-play commentary happening.

Until then check out yesterday’s results and recap to get an overview of what’s going on.

http://www.supracer.com/2014-ultimate-sup-showdown-results/

Also take a look at our Showdown PREDICTIONS to see if I’m on the money or not…

http://www.supracer.com/showdown-2014-predictions/

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20149:15 am

So the preliminary race qualifying finals are on from 1pm-2pm this afternoon. Right now it’s 9:15am in Hawaii.

Use this simple Google search to figure out your time zone difference:

https://www.google.com/#q=what's+the+time+in+hawaii

The main spectacle of this whole Ultimate SUP Showdown event is the “Showdown” grand finale. That’s going to be a 15 minute race in and out through the surf. Basically a mini Battle of the Paddle on steroids. That’s happening at 4pm local time and will be one of the single most competitive races of the year…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20149:13 am

Here’s how it looks out in front today. Beautiful day, though the waves are a little inconsistent. The tide will be dropping later this afternoon for the Showdown grand finale (which is a 15 minute race in and out through the surf), so I think we’ll get the carnage we’re looking for in that one.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20149:09 am

Here’s a pic of Sean and Zane being interviewed by Julia Mancuso a few minutes ago…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20149:07 am

Results from quarter final #3: 1st: Giorgio Gomez, 2nd: Kai Bates, 3rd: Josh Riccio, 4th: Robin Johnston. So Giorgio and Kai are through to the semis (and the Showdown finale). Josh and Robin are out, however Josh finishes inside the top 12 in the surf contest, giving him an automatic spot in the Showdown finale. Just like Jake Jensen, Josh is another guy who could easily qualify in both sides of the tournament…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20149:01 am

I just chatted to Sean and Zane downstairs – they said it was pretty tough out there: Fun waves but really inconsistent, so hard to catch two good ones in the 20 minute heats.

The two Starboard boys were being interviewed on the beach by Julia Mancuso, the Olympic Gold Medalist… Julia is the roving reporter for the Showdown’s CBS Sports Network TV production. Yes, this event is next level…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20148:59 am

Sean Poynter took out the Quarter Final #2 with Zane Schweitzer in second place. So both of those guys are through to the semi-finals as well as the Showdown main event. Out in the water now we’ve got Giorgio Gomez, Josh Riccio, Kai Bates and Robin Johnston in quarter #3

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20148:48 am

Basically if you perform well in both the surfing and the racing you’ll probably be on the front row. If you do really well in one discipline but terrible in the other, you’ll be on the bubble. If you just scrape through in one discipline and bomb out in the other, you’re guaranteed to be on the second row.

If you’re on the second row you’ve got around a 4-5 second delay at the start, plus you have to fight your way back through the front pack. So you really don’t want to be on that second row…

This is interesting, because a lot of the top racers that are favourites in the Showdown finale aren’t the most serious of surfers. That means they’ll have to perform very well in the racing preliminary finals to make up for their early round exists in the surf contest.

Guys like Travis Grant and Danny Ching for example, both of whom could easily win the racing and the Showdown, finished near the bottom of the surf contest. It’s not that these guys can’t surf, they’re just up against some serious, world class dedicated surfers.

This may also to apply to some of the top women, such as Annabel Anderson who’s a much better racer than surfer.

If these big names start on the second row it’ll be a big advantage to the front row contenders. I’m thinking guys like Kai Lenny and Zane Schweitzer (two of my picks for the podium) will be on the front row, given their combined surfing/racing prowess.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20148:44 am

Oh and another cool thing about qualifying in both the surfing and the racing is that you’ll get on the front row for the start of the Showdown.

In an effort to encourage paddlers to try as hard as they can in both the surfing and the racing, organisers have given an incentive to competitors who perform well in both disciplines. The Showdown main event, which is a 15 minute race through the waves, will actually have two start lines

Similar to Formua 1, there will be a grid system: On front row and in “pole position” will be the top 16 qualifiers (top 12 men and top 4 women), while on the second row, and at a distinct disadvantage, will be the next 16 qualifiers (12 men / 4 women).

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20148:42 am

Out in the water (quarter final #2) we’ve got Sean Poynter and Zane Schweitzer, along with Koliah ‘Fuzzy’ Jardine and Mikey O’Shaugnessy

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20148:42 am

It’s interesting that Jake has qualified for the finale through the surfing side of the event; he’s pretty much a guaranteed bet to qualify through the racing side as well. That means he’ll be a “Double Qualifier” which in turn opens up a spot for a lucky loser.

The top 12 surfers and top 12 racers qualify for the Showdown, however if somebody finishes top 12 in both then the guy who finished 13th gets the spot.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20148:41 am

We’ve just finished the first heat of the day and to the surprise of absolutely nobody, Kai Lenny took it out. In 2nd and going through to the semis is Fernando Stalla. Finishing 3rd and going no further in the surf contest, but scoring an automatic spot into the Showdown finale, was Jake Jensen. Kekoa Auwae finished 4th.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20148:39 am

Those 12 SUP surfers will be joined by 12 SUP racers in the Showdown, an interesting mix of racing in the waves (kind of like the Battle of the Paddle but on steroids)

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20148:39 am

Ok so here’s what we’ve got. First up this morning are the 4x men’s quarter-finals in the SUP surfing. So we’re down to the last 16 guys in the surf contest. You just need to finish Top 12 to get an automatic qualification into the Showdown grand finale, meaning even if you get knocked out in this round, so long as you finish third you’ll be through to the main event.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20148:38 am

Conditions today are looking pretty fun out there. Surf might have dropped slightly from yesterday but still plenty of waves. It is, rather unsurprisingly, blue skies and sunny in Hawaii today. We’re setup at the main break in Waikiki (“Queens” is the spot name), right out front of the iconic Duke Kahanamoku statue.

Kinda interesting to see the four surfers in the water have their own peak just to the left, while 100 metres over to the right we’ve got about three hundred locals and tourists sitting in the water. Waikiki is a super fun little wave but it’s surely the most insanely crowded place surf spot in the world. And that’s saying something coming from the Gold Coast…

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20148:34 am

Ok I’m up in the main tower overlooking the water, so we’re all set for the live updates to begin.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20148:09 am

CLICK HERE for today’s schedule and heat draw.Basically it’s surfing all morning (8am-1pm) followed by the racing semis and finals from 1pm-2pm, then the Showdown finale, the main event, will be at 4pm Hawaii time.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 18, 20148:07 am

Good morning and welcome to Waikiki. It’s going to be a massive day so let’s get straight into it.

First up we’ve got the surfing quarters, with Kai Lenny and Fernando Stalla about to hit the water in the opening heat.

We’ll have regular updates and results all morning, leading up to our live, play-by-play commentary during the racing finals and the Showdown grand finale.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 17, 20148:50 pm

The action doesn’t actually start for another 11 hours, I’m just getting this live blog setup early and making sure we avoid the server apocalypse that happened during Molokai the other week (I paid to have SUPracer.com re-built like Fort Knox, so I think we’re safe).

So yeah. Check back in the morning.

8am-1pm: SUP surfing quarters, semis and finals
1pm-2pm: SUP racing semis and finals
2pm-4pm: popcorn time
4pm: The Showdown grand finale (this is where the $25k and all the glory is on the line)

Click here for Monday’s full schedule + heat draws.

Christopher Parker Christopher Parker August 17, 20148:45 pm

Hey everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the 2014 Ultimate SUP Showdown here in Waikiki. Thanks to the awesome crew at Rogue SUP, we’ll have live updates all day long, including play-by-play commentary of the racing finals plus the main event: The “Showdown” grand finale.

The action starts at 8am with the SUP surfing quarters, semis and finals. That’ll go for a good five hours. At 1pm we have the qualifying race semis and finals, before the Showdown hits the water at 4pm.

When should you tune in?

Check out this simple Google search to see what the time is in Hawaii.

Then check back at 8am if you want the surfing results, or tune in from 1pm if you’re only interested in the racing (I’ll be honest: my updates are going to be a lot thicker and faster during the racing than the surfing…)

It’s going to be a super crazy day on the water, with one of the most competitive lineups of the year. There are probably 15 different guys who could legitimately snag a spot on the podium, with six or seven of them in contention for the win.

The women’s race will be very hard fought as well. Throw into the mix the unique Showdown course, which is basically a sideways slalom course across the surf break, and we’re going to see one hell of a battle out there.
