RESULTS: Kai Wins The Finals @ Turtle Bay, But Connor Baxter And Lina Augaitis Win The 2014 World Series Titles

Stand Up World Series Turtle BayThe final event of the 2014 Stand Up World Series is happening this weekend has just wrapped up on the North Shore of Oahu. Based out of Turtle Bay, which sits just down the road from famed breaks such as Waimea, Sunset and Pipeline, the World Series Finals will see a very small but hyper-elite band of young guns battle it out in what could be some very interesting conditions.

One week after the all-time, wave-fueled carnage at Salt Creek, the surf at Turtle Bay looks set to throw up another chaotic weekend of racing. Yesterday the North Shore was tipping a solid 10-12 ft plus (20 ft faces) and while the swell is expected to slightly dip today and tomorrow, I’m confident there will be some entertaining chaos to enjoy.   → READ MORE

Zane And Fiona Win At Huntington As The Blue Crash Helmets Return

US SUP Tour Huntington Beach stand up paddle raceThe last stop of the US SUP Tour race series was held in Huntington today. With solid little waves and an elite crew that are in town for Battle Month, the event offered up some pretty good action.

After a few rounds of racing (and countless buoy turn carnage pics), coming out on top were Zane Schweitzer and Fiona Wylde. Zaniac edged out Mo Freitas, Bicho Jimenez and Fernando Stalla, while Fiona Wylde was too good for Shae Foudy, Candice Appleby and Halie Harrison.   → READ MORE

[UPDATED] Angie Jackson, Zane Schweitzer And Casper Steinfath The Best In Bilbao As The Euro Tour Rolls On

Bilbao SUP Challenge SpainIt’s week #4 of the Euro Tour and this weekend we’re in the awesome city of Bilbao, Spain for another big race: The Bilbao World SUP Challenge. The action wrapped up just moments ago and it was Zane Schweitzer and Angie Jackson who claiming the overall event titles.

This event attracted a pretty solid lineup of talent; I’d say there were around 15 paddlers competing who would be on the top level internationally. Set right near the iconic Guggenheim Museum, the event involved sprint racing on Saturday before a 13km cruise through the city on Sunday.

Here’s how it all went down.   → READ MORE

Cool Pics From The Latest Stop Of The U.S. SUP Tour

US SUP TourSome cool pics from the second stop of the 2014 U.S. SUP Tour, which was held at Hermosa on the weekend. Unlike the previous Tour stops, this one skipped the surf contest and was a pure racing event.

Fresh from his medal in Nicaragua, Captain America was back on show and took out yet another Tour victory. Slater came home first in the Elite Course Race ahead of another one of those young-guys-who-both-surf-and-race-annoying-well, Zane Schweitzer. Rounding out the top four was the Mexican duo of Javier Jimenez and Fernando Stalla, who actually competed for their country against Slater in the ISA Worlds earlier this month.   → READ MORE

2014 Stand Up World Series Kicks Off In Brazil; Clean Sweeps For Connor Baxter, Angie Jackson

Stand Up World Series BrazilA small but elite field of young talent has launched the 2014 Stand Up World Series in Brazil this weekend, with Connor Baxter drawing first blood by making it a clean sweep of both the Sprint and Long Distance races. Meanwhile on the women’s side it was Angie Jackson all the way, with the reinvigorated Aussie proving too strong for a select group of local and international paddlers.

The Connor/Kai rivalry, the recurring theme of the 2013 Series, returned on Day One of the Alagoas Pro, with the two superstars battling all the way to the finish line in the sprints. Connor got the win by half a second, while one wave  behind was Aussie Jake Jensen, a paddler that I (and many others in Australia) have tipped to be one of the World Series title contenders this year. Coming home 4th was Zane Schweitzer, while rounding out the top 5 in the sprints was the Danish Viking, Casper Steinfath.   → READ MORE

VIDEO: The Ultimate SUP Showdown Stirs To Life With Bizarre Teaser Clip

Ultimate SUP ShowdownI’m not sure what I just watched, but I believe it was a promo for the 2014 Ultimate SUP Showdown. In what is easily the most unique stand up paddling video that’s come across our virtual desk in… ever, this two minute trailer features Connor Baxter and Zane Schweitzer doing everything from riding giant waves to receiving a pedicure.

The clip is a teaser for an extended series of webisodes that’ll be debuting soon, with the aim of entertaining and spreading the word of stand up paddling to a new demographic (the focus is on “people who have no experience of SUP… reaching a new audience” according to Showdown organisers) while also promoting the Ultimate SUP Showdown brand at the same time.   → READ MORE

What Do The World’s Best SUP Racers Do In The Off Season? (Hint: Involves Giant Waves)

Jamie Mitchell So what do the world’s best SUP racers get up to in the off season? Train on their new 12’6″ prototypes? Practice their buoy turns? Do lots of dips & lunges? Well if your name is Jamie Mitchell, Matt Becker, Kai Lenny, Connor Baxter, Chuck Patterson, Dave Kalama or any of the other SUP racers who clearly have a screw loose, the answer is: Hell no, let’s go surf stupidly large waves instead.

I guess after six months spent grinding across flat lakes, surfing 12’6 race boards on 2 foot waves and riding bumps in the ocean that don’t even break, you might as well take it to the extreme opposite end of the scale, right?   → READ MORE
